A Short History - Magdalena

Magdalena Maier (listed as Christina in the records at Mound City, St)  was born 18 Sept. 1910, the third child of Jacob and Elizabetha (Grenz) Maier.  Her birthplace was listed as Campbell County, SD.

In approximately 1911, the family moved to Emmons County, ND.  Township 134, Section 30.

Formal schooling ended early for Maggie; she worked as a "hired girl" for various families in the Hazelton area until her marriage to Arthur Humann.

Arthur was born on his parent's farm about 15 miles west of Hazelton, ND.  He attended rural schools and religious school in Emmonsburg, ND, where they were taught reading, writing and Bible study (all in German).

After their marriage, Art and Maggie lived with his parents and helped them put in the crop that spring.  Later that spring, they bought and moved to a farm in Township 134 Section 4 Range 78 in Emmons County.  Their son Ruben lives on this farm now (1992).  Art & Maggie raised eleven children on this farm.  In 1959, they moved into Hazelton.

Maggie was very good at vegetable and flower gardening.  The farm-yard was always well-kept, with a large flower garden near the house.  Maggie's children always knew when the first day of spring was, because the rakes were ready and waiting for the spring cleaning of every inch of the yard!

A favorite hobby during the winter was making stuffed animals and dolls, building children's furniture, and sewing baby blankets for their fast-growing family of grandchildren in later years.

Maggie died on 8 June, 1967 and is interred at the Hazelton City Cemetery.
