Richard Maier left this Earth for the big
Sunset in the sky on Feb. 7, 2015 at age 75.
Born in Lodi to Philip and Irene Maier, he grew up in Napa,
graduating from Napa High in 1957 and UC Berkeley in 1961.
During the Vietnam War, he served five years as a Navigator
on C-130 Transport Aircraft with missions to Vietnam, Japan,
and the Dominican Republic.
While stationed at Moffett Airfield he married Lana Mezulis,
a classmate of his from both high school and college. Upon
his discharge as a Lieutenant, he joined IBM in Stockton,
where he Richard helped coach his son’s little league and
daughter’s soccer teams.
He was a dedicated blood donor, having donated 19 gallons
during his lifetime. An avid boater, he spent countless days
cruising the San Joaquin Delta as well as offshore to
British Columbia and Alaska. He was Commodore of the Ox Bow
Yacht Club and belonged to the Northern California Grand
Banks Owners Association. He loved tinkering on the boat,
was good with his hands, and could fix anything. An ultimate
optimist, he always saw the positive in everything.
Richard is survived by his wife Lana, son Chris (Renelle),
daughter Sue Kuhne (Jim), grandchildren Ava, Nolan, Jack and
Ainsley, and sister Patricia Slaight (Jim).
We have lost a friend, a Dad, a partner and a guiding light.
May he rest easy!
