The attitude of Russian society believed that Russian culture and traditions were at stake.  It was this atmosphere that led to the harassment of French and German immigrants.  It reached a point where it was not longer possible for them to remain in Russia.

Most of these Germans eventually came to America.  Large numbers settled in the Midwest during the last half of the 19th century.  From the Midwest they spread in all directions in the United States

Evangelical Germans from the BLACK SEA AREA settled in NORTH DAKOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA, KANSAS, TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA.  Catholic Germans also settled in the MISSOURI AND THE DAKOTAS.  Evangelical Germans from the VOLGA AREA settled in OKLAHOMA, COLORADO, NEBRASKA AND MINNESOTA.  The German Catholics settled in COLORADO AND KANSAS.

After the 1919 revolution which overthrew the Czarist regime, the remaining groups were no longer welcome, immigrating this time to CANADA.

The Grenz Diaspora in North America

Gottlieb and Samuel settled originally in the South Dakota and North Dakota regions and spread from there.  Michael Grenz settled in the Kansas area and spread from that area.  No information for Anna Maria.

The number of Grenz's living in each state as of 2008 White Pages search,  is listed in their appropriate States near their greatest concentration in the white squares.  Total listed:   897.  This does not represent actual numbers since many may chose not to be in the White Pages and does not reflect growth since 2008, nor does it reflect movement or immigration..
