Obituary

Elisabeth began her earthly journey in Russia on Dec. 6, 1865 and completed it in Leola, SD, on Oct. 20, 1918.  Death was due to the Spanish influenza.  On Sept. 1. 1887, she married Gottlieb Quaschnick, who now mourns her death.  This marriage was blessed with 5 girls and 1 boy.  Two girls, one 17 yrs. of age and one widowed (Ell) 26 years of age, predeceased her mother.  Her husband, three daughters and one son, 5 grandchildren and a large circle of relatives mourn her death.  The deceased was converted under the ministry of preacher. G. Engelmann and by baptism joined the Eureka church.  Her life situation was not easy.  Separated from the church, she feared that her name might be stricken from the records. Although she was not active she felt united in spirit with God's children. Her funeral serves to remind us of the timely words of our Savior, "Therefore be ye also ready".  The Lord comfort and draw all survivors to himself.

Gottlieb Quashnick

Emigrated to the USA in 1883 with family arriving in Scotland, South Dakota in July 1883.  Gottlieb worked on a farm near there for eighteen months and then came to Campbell County, where he filed on a Pre-emption homestead and timber claim.  At that time there were no towns in Campbell County, which made it necessary to drive to Bowdle for equipment and supplies.  He purchased a pair of oxen, plow and wagon on credit terms, and after building a sod house started breaking up the sod.  Due to lack of equipment in those days, some of the work had to be done in a more or less crude manner.  An oven was made by digging a hole in the side of the creek bed, from which a small opening, serving as a chimney was made to the surface.  Stones were then heated in the large hole, after which the ashes were taken out and the dough placed on the hot stones.  The results, it is claimed, were quite satisfactory.  In the year 1887, Gottlieb Quaschnick married Elizabeth Grenz.  Mr. Quaschnick farmed for seven years, after which he took up his residence in Eureka.  Here he worked at common labor for twelve years, and was also employed as a clerk in the Eureka Bazaar.  In 1906, he entered business in Leolia, from which he retired about twelve years later.  He now resides in Eureka
