Hilda "Johnnie" (Trost) Dean
Powell, 91, died of lung cancer Thursday,
May 12, at Peace Hospice.
Visitation is an hour prior to her 11 a.m. funeral Tuesday
at Brady United Methodist Church, with burial at Hillside
Cemetery in Conrad. Pondera Funeral Home of Conrad is in
charge of arrangements.
Johnnie was born July 6, 1919, to Jacob and Rosa Trost, in
Butler, Okla., and as she said, "When they made me, they
threw away the mold!" The third youngest of 10 children, she
moved to Agawam, Mont., and attended school there until
eighth grade. Her family then moved to Brady, where she
graduated from high school.
Dance lessons at Brady High School began her lifelong love
of dance, which led to being a dance instructor for Arthur
Murray. Johnnie married Francis Dean in 1939, and he served
with the Marines at Iwo Jima. Daughter Judy was born in
1944, in Great Falls. Johnnie enrolled in Great Falls
Commercial College and worked for the Army Air Force at
Malmstrom Air Force Base and then at Columbus Hospital as a
medical secretary for 30 years.
After retiring, she worked at Heritage Hotel gift shop,
where she perfected her love of people from all over the
world. Always sporting the most fashionable clothes and
jewelry, she looked beautiful until the day she died.
Johnnie loved her family and her special friends, Lucille,
Bob, Linda, Britney and Rick at the Dearborn Apartments. She
loved baseball, walking, reading and traveling. She was
always ready to dance, laugh and have a good time. Family
came first, especially her daughter, Judy. Johnnie
volunteered for the American Cancer Society and Easter
Seals. Always warm, generous, loving and funny, Johnnie had
friends of many ages in many places.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Dean (Jackie) of New
Richmond, Wis.; sister Lydia Lindsay of Great Falls; and
special nieces and nephews, Del and Joan Trost, Rena and
Delos Putz, Melanie and Bill Wilmot, Doug and Kate Trost;
and sister-in-law Dorothy Trost and family.
