The story has it that three hundred years ago Buddhist
monks wanted to build a monastery at the Mera La.
They carried with them a small gold Buddha a few inches in
height.
As they travelled up the trail the statue became heavier
and heavier until they could no longer carry it.
When the monks sat the gold Buddha down and turned around
to head back, and then picked the statue back up, the
statue became suddenly lighter. They determined that
this spot was where Buddha wanted the monastery to be
built. The terrain, being abruptly slopped, prevented a
traditional style building to be built, hence what we have
now.
Legend has it that the gold statues is still there under
one of the three sitting Buddha's. Is
it? I wonder!
